Leave a Legacy of Clean Water for Future Generations

In the 1940s Montana’s famous statesman, Mike Mansfield, found himself in a fight that he would later describe as the most satisfying accomplishment of his illustrious career. Mansfield opposed plans by the Army Corps of Engineers and the Bonneville Power Authority to raise the height of the Seli'š Ksanka Qlispe', then known as Kerr Dam, on Flathead Lake.  The motivations for increasing the height of the dam had global implications. In hindsight, we now see that the additional power produced would have almost certainly gone to refining uranium and producing weapons needed in WWII. Mansfield was unaware of the closely kept military secrets being executed downstream and their potential impacts. He was firmly committed to protecting Flathead Lake and the people of western Montana which came to define his legacy and we forever thank him.

Like Mansfield, the Flathead Lakers have been committed to protecting and preserving Flathead for the past 66 years. We have fought back against serious threats to this special place year after year, decade after decade.
