FWP looking to improve habitat Flathead Lake Islands.

The Flathead Valley was overflowing with visitors this summer looking for ways and places to enjoy the beauty, recreation, and quiet of Montana's outdoors. The islands around Flathead Lake are an increasingly popular destination, and the impacts of human activity are taking its toll.

Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks is proposing to improve management of public recreation on its Flathead Lake Island properties, including Bird, Cedar, Douglas, and Goose islands. FWP hopes to address issues of human waste, garbage, vandalism, and more, as they seek to balance recreational opportunities and habitat conservation.

The Flathead Lakers will be commenting on the proposal, as well as attending the public meeting. If you are interested in also providing comment or learning more about the issues, go to Flathead Lake Islands Proposed Recreation Management site. You can read the Draft Environmental Assessment, and submit your comments online at the bottom of the page.

A virtual public information meeting is scheduled for 6 p.m., Nov. 3, 2021 on Zoom. The meeting information will be posted online at https://fwp.mt.gov/aboutfwp/regions/region1.

Public comments will be accepted through 5 p.m., Nov. 22, 2021.

Written comments can be mailed to: FHL Islands EA, Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks, 490 N. Meridian Road, Kalispell, MT 59901, or sent by e-mail to JColtrane@mt.gov.
