A Watershed Moment

Earlier this month, the Flathead Lakers installed a mural outside our offices that celebrates and honors the natural beauty, tribal culture, history, and wildlife of Flathead Lake and watershed. We invite you to stop by the Salish Building (110 Main St., Polson), and take in the completed mural. Discover the little details that make our watershed so special.

A "Watershed Moment" was created by wall artist Thievin Stephen:

'This mural shows two views of Flathead Lake, one of the largest, cleanest natural bodies of freshwater in the populated world, and home to the Bitterroot Salish, Kootenai, and Pend d'Oreilles. The land and wildlife in this mural was chosen due to their sacred significance to these cultures. This aspect of the mural was formed in collaboration with Cameron Decker, an artist and professor at Salish Kootenai College. Big thanks to my collaborator @deckpots. Other details in the mural arrived from conversations with the Flathead Lakers, and draw from their robust advocacy work, which includes land conservation, water purity, storm water runoff, aquatic invasive species, septic system awareness, and climate change. ... I hope this mural reminds people to cherish what they have left.' @thievinstephen

We are grateful to the artist, contributors, and donors of the project, including the Binger family who own the Salish Building, Flathead Lakers members, the Greater Polson Community Foundation, and the Flathead Lake Biological Station. And thanks to the Boys and Girls Clubs of Polson and Ronan and Jeff and Susan Tuttle for sharing this special moment with us, the Flathead Lakers, and our Flathead Watershed community.
