Celebrate Lake Appreciation Month in the Flathead Watershed!

Did you know that July is Lake Appreciation Month? It's a time to recognize and celebrate the incredible lakes that grace our world, including the breathtaking lakes found in the Flathead Watershed. As we immerse ourselves in the beauty of these natural wonders, let's also take a moment to learn about how we can appreciate and protect our lakes this July. Whether you're a local resident or a visitor, here are some wonderful ways to honor and enjoy the lakes during this special month:

  • Participate in Secchi Dip-In: The Secchi Dip-in is an international effort to to collect water clarity data from lakes, rivers, and streams all around North America since 1994. Started by the North American Lakes Management Society, this database is extensive and helps scientists learn about trends in water clarity, and what those trends mean. It is important that Flathead Lake participates in this annual Secchi Dip-in, to include our data in nationwide trends but also for us to keep an eye on our lake and watershed. Learn more about how you can participate in this year's Secchi Dip-in.

  • Embrace Sustainable Shoreline Practices: The health of our lakes is closely tied to the well-being of their surrounding shorelines. Adopt sustainable shoreline practices such as planting native vegetation, minimizing the use of fertilizers and pesticides, and reducing stormwater runoff. These actions help maintain water quality, prevent erosion, and provide vital habitats for aquatic species.

  • Participate in a Lake Cleanup: Show your appreciation for the lakes by participating in a lake cleanup event. Gather a group of friends, family, or fellow lake enthusiasts and organize a cleanup day. Remove litter and debris from the shoreline, ensuring the lakes remain clean and vibrant for all to enjoy. Mark your calendars for Saturday, August 12 for the annual Flathead Waters Clean Up!

  • Practice Responsible Boating: If you're planning to spend time on the lakes, it's crucial to practice responsible boating. Be mindful of speed limits, follow navigation rules, and respect no-wake zones to prevent erosion and protect sensitive shoreline habitats. Ensure that your boat is clean, draining any water or debris that may carry invasive species, and dispose of trash responsibly.

  • Explore the Lakes: The Flathead Watershed is blessed with an abundance of picturesque lakes, such as Flathead Lake, Whitefish Lake, Swan Lake, and many more. Take the time to explore these natural wonders by embarking on a lake-friendly adventure like kayaking, swimming, or paddle boarding. Join a guided tour to truly immerse yourself in the beauty of these pristine waters.

Remember, the lakes in the Flathead Watershed are not only natural treasures but also provide vital resources for both wildlife and the surrounding communities. Let's celebrate Lake Appreciation Month by enjoying these lakes responsibly, educating ourselves about their ecological significance, and taking action to preserve their beauty for generations to come.
